Citrix Announces Purchase of XenSource
Citrix has announced another strategic acquisition. Citrix is entering the hypervisor arena through the purchase of XenSource. XenSource is a proprietary company that add value to the open-source Xen hypervisor. This move will force Citrix to “to walk a line of both supporting the open source initiative and fielding its own products” as Charles Babcock points out in his article titled “Citrix Buying XenSource To Tap Red-Hot Virtualization Market“. Brian Madden has also written some more in-depth articles about this acquisition on his web site. Check out “Should Citrix buy a hypervisor?” and “Citrix buys XenSource for $500M“. These two articles give an independent analysis of the technology and the deal. To get the official Citrix statement on the deal, read the Citrix press release.

[…] Citrix has started to reveal some of their strategy surrounding the XenSource purchase made earlier this year. SearchITChannel.com reports, “Citrix Systems Inc. is enlisting the aid of server hardware vendors to help intensify its relatively new effort to compete explicitly in the desktop and server virtualization market, with open source virtualization as its latest weapon. Citrix will release “a couple of announcements hopefully before the end of the year” detailing which major vendors will preinstall Citrix’s XenExpress OEM Edition hypervisor on their servers, according to Matt Haynes, Citrix’s director of sales strategies, channels and field marketing. “That OEM strategy will be part of our go-to-market strategy,” he said. […] XenSource has gotten more attention ever since Citrix acquired it. In order to run Xen, you need a 64 bit server. So, testing XenSource out in a lab can be a little “sketchy” if you do not have 64 bit hardware available for testing. Luckily, a new article on TechAgility shows you how to use VMWare Workstation to host a virtual XenServer (I know that is kind of like drinking Coke out of a Pepsi glass). The article does a good job of stepping you through the process with screen shots. This is a cool way to test out Xen and XenSource in a low budget manner. […]

[…] Gus Pinto is reporting live from Citrix Solutions Summit. One of the “major” announcements made is that Citrix has changed the named of Presentation Server to XenApp. This falls in line with Citrix’s purchase of XenSource. Ever since the purchase of XenSource, Citrix has been re-branding products with the Xen name (XenServer, XenDesktop, XenApp). This is not the first time Citrix has renamed a product. For example (a little history here): […]
